More health care info; hour-long NPR special Thursday (Sept. 3)

Public Radio KTEP to Carry NPR News Health Care Special

Hour-long Special Will Air Thursday September 3 at 6pm on KTEP FM (88.5)

El Paso, TX, August 28, 2009

NPR News will broadcast an hour-long special program on the debate over health car in America. The program can be heard on El Paso’s NPR affiliate, KTEP-FM (88.5) on Thursday September 3 at 6 pm.

The news special will recap recent political developments in the health care debate and explore the roles patients, physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, the government and business play in the current health care system and in the debate over the future of health care in America.

The special will be hosted by Robert Siegel, host of NPR’s All Things Considered, as well as analysis from NPR health policy correspondent Julie Rovner; Editor Joe Neel, the leader of NPR’s coverage of the health care debate; David Kestenbaum of NPR’s Planet Money; and National Political Correspondent Mara Liasson.

Water Utilities damages Resler Canyon

From the El Paso Naturally Blog (Editor’s note: This posting was changed at 10:20 a.m. Aug. 31 to correct the source of the item):

Resler Canyon between Mesa Street and I-10 is a nature preserve of the Frontera Land Alliance. Recently, following a complaint about erosion by Café Italia, the El Paso Water Utilities apparently violated an easement agreement with the Land Alliance and illegally dumped dirt into the canyon in an effort to stop the erosion. In fact, the effort is much like doing a year of chemo treatment for a toothache. The lose soil dumped down the side of the canyon will eventually avalanche down the hill taking out more trees as it slides. Frontera Board member, Charlie Wakeem, called it a “major encroachment”.

Rally for immigration reform on Saturday

Hundreds will Rally In El Paso to Kick-off Statewide Comprehensive Immigration Reform Campaign

A multi-sector Alliance will also present a fresh new Petition with more than 4000 signatures of El Pasoans calling upon President Obama and Texas Senators to Stop the Rhetoric and Enforcement Only and “get up and work” to fix our broken system this year.

Wednesday August 25, 2009. El Paso, Texas. The Border Network for Human Rights, as part of Reform Immigration for Texas Alliance (RITA) and the Reform Immigration for America Campaign, is coordinating a kick-off rally in El Paso to launch a Texas statewide push for comprehensive immigration reform. The rally will take place on Saturday August 29th, 2009 at the El Paso Convention Center.

On this same day, similar events are taking place all over Texas organized by the members of RITA. Among those cities joining the launching of the campaign simultaneously are Forth Worth-Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Juan, Brownsville and El Paso.
