But how did he die? Pt. 2

Press release to the NPT Inbox. There is a pattern here. Question: What is more important about this event — that a man died, or that he threatened officers with a knife?

Location: Copia and Fort Blvd.
Subject: 27-year old Javier Francisco Guerrero of the 3400 block of Hamilton

EL PASO, TEXAS –A man dies after threatening officers with a knife. Officers Cordova and Schneider, both assigned to the Central Regional Command’s TAC unit, were working a plain clothes assignment in the area of Copia and Fort Blvd. The preliminary investigation revealed the officers observed 27-year old Javier Francisco Guerrero acting suspicious in front of a business displaying two knives. The officers approached Guerrero, identified themselves as police officers with their badges visible, and attempted to detain him. When Guerrero saw the officers he immediately fled on foot. The officers pursued Guerrero on foot a short distance. Guerrero stopped and confronted the officers threatening the officers with the knives. The officers fearing for their lives both shot Guerrero. Guerrero was transported to WBAMC where he died. Three independent investigations into the shooting have begun. One by the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit; one by the El Paso Police Department’s Shooting Response Team; and one by the Office of District Attorney Jaime Esparza. As is customary, the officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigations.

  1. That’s two men that ELP Police have gunned down in the same general area…the last one was a youngman who had mental problems. I certainly understand that the police must protect themselves, but I am troubled that two guys with guns have to kill someone with a knife….I support the police but let’s work on training that reduces deadly force unless absolutely necessary.

  2. The individual that was killed was a very unstable individual. He entered places of business and asked female employess for sex. The police have pictures of this individual hanging around elementary schools. This individual had no respect or fear of authority. Completely justified shooting will be the outcome. Sad that the family didn’t take a more active part in his supervision and control of his mental illness. Now they want to cash in. Sad but necessary. I commend the police department for their action in protecting our community from a truly sick and evil individual.
