EL PASO, TEXAS –A man dies after threatening officers with a knife. Officers Cordova and Schneider, both assigned to the Central Regional Command’s TAC unit, were working a plain clothes assignment in the area of Copia and Fort Blvd. The preliminary investigation revealed the officers observed 27-year old Javier Francisco Guerrero acting suspicious in front of a business displaying two knives. The officers approached Guerrero, identified themselves as police officers with their badges visible, and attempted to detain him. When Guerrero saw the officers he immediately fled on foot. The officers pursued Guerrero on foot a short distance. Guerrero stopped and confronted the officers threatening the officers with the knives. The officers fearing for their lives both shot Guerrero. Guerrero was transported to WBAMC where he died. Three independent investigations into the shooting have begun. One by the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit; one by the El Paso Police Department’s Shooting Response Team; and one by the Office of District Attorney Jaime Esparza. As is customary, the officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigations.
