Callers go after Reyes for town-hall meetings on Congress’ health insurance plans

U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes was catching it from callers on today’s Barbara Perez radio show over the medical health plan working its way through Congress.

The callers had pointed questions about the plan, its future costs and the impact on their situation.

And one after another asked Reyes why he is not using the August recess to conduct one or more town-hall meetings to explain and defend the plan President Obama wants. He was even accused of hiding on Perez’s show instead of meeting people face to face.

Reyes didn’t really explain his reasons but directed each person who called to telephone his El Paso office for answers or a meeting with him.

At the end of the show, Perez noted the criticism directed at him for the lack of meetings and acknowledged, “It’s your call to make.”

Repeating his invitation to call his office at 534-4400, Reyes said, “I believe it’s important to talk about this and get the information out there.”

District 23 U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez doesn’t have any town hall meetings planned either according to his San Antonio home office. The office reported that Rodriguez is visiting the 30-county district now to hear fron constituents and will return home near the end of the month. For now, he has no plans for mass meetings with the public.

Just as the show was ending, Perez addressed what must have been a caller’s comment by asking Reyes to tell listeners whether the two of them had ever gone to dinner together.

Reyes said he had never had dinner with Perez.
