CQ: U.S. Rep. Reyes has no competition in El Paso

That’s how Congressional Quarterly pegs it. The publication’s ranking of House races has the seat as “safe,” although it only looks at Republican v. Democratic, and does not account for primary challenges or challenges from independents. So, anyone want to calculate the odds of a Republican surprise challenger making an impact, or a primary or independent challenge? Didn’t think so …

Here is the list of rated House campaigns.

Here is what CQ has for a Reyes profile.

  1. Thanks NPT for reminding us that nobody should run for office if you think you might lose or someone says you might lose!

Thank God a bunch of meek little men 200+ years ago took your advice and didn’t rise up in defense of liberty even though everyone told they’d lose… Oh wait – they did and beat the most powerful nation on earth for their freedom.

    You stay classy NPT!

  2. NDK, not sure where you read into the item that “nobody should run for office.” Just stating some facts. Now, if you want to rise up and secede from the most powerful nation on earth, more power to you! The chances of that are only slightly less than someone beating Reyes given the current facts at hand (voter turnout, money, organization). Of course, theoretically, anyone is beatable. A major scandal can change things, as can a great grassroots organization coupled with lots of money. Neither of those factors has appeared yet.

  3. beto or cook will proabably run against reyes. i guess ndk will have to support one of those 2 since a republican will have no chance. with low turnout you might could have a demo candidate walk the streets and out hustle reyes. as we all watched in the castro-carl election that how much you spend doesnt always work. el paso will always be the bastard city of texas because we always vote the same straight ticket every year and have never been a swing vote city. i mean if dee margo couldnt beat moody, republicans are truly fooked when it comes to reyes’s seat.
