Statement on the ‘Chico’s kiss’ from Rio Grande Adelante, a GLBTS group
Received by NPT:
Rio Grande Adelante, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and supportive community, would like to make this statement with regard to the incident of two gay men kissing at Chico’s Tacos. This year we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that took place in New York City in June 1969. We find it ironic and appalling that 40 years later, an incident such as this could take place in our great city of El Paso, Texas. Instead of educating ourselves and moving forward towards true acceptance of diversity, El Paso culture once again has taken two steps backward. Adelante strives to encourage, educate, and inform our community on issues relating to topics of human rights and encourages recognition and celebrates the diversity of all people.
We urge the management of Chico’s Tacos to make an equivocal statement with regard to its policy on serving all people with regardless of their gender, ethnic origin, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identification. We also demand Chico’s Tacos retain other services of another security company whose employees are respectful of its patrons and know the laws of its city. Presently, we are not advocating a boycott of Chico’s Tacos because we have confidence they will do what is right.
Furthermore, we expect the City of El Paso to issue a formal apology for the manner in which the Police Department responded to this incident, both initially and in follow-up statements from its spokesman Det. Carrillo. Definitive steps must be taken to insure incidents such as this will not happen in the future. Individuals who are known to have violated the City’s ordinance covering this situation should be cited and prosecuted. Our laws must be enforced, and if there is any appropriate time to do that, it is as we stand in community united in equality of all citizens.
