NPT Capitol: Shapleigh seeks CHIP expansion inclusion in special session

News release from the office of state Sen. Eliot Shapleigh:

Senator Shapleigh calls on Governor Perry to include CHIP expansion in Special Session

“Expanding CHIP is vitally important in Texas as the state currently ranks first in the nation in the number and percentage of uninsured children. The state also ranks seventh nationally in the number of children living in poverty. Of the approximately 9 million uninsured children in the U.S., one in six are from Texas. Insuring more Texas children in CHIP will make for healthier children, and save the state money over time by helping families avoid using hospital emergency rooms as their only access to health care.”

NPT: Looking for asylum

News release received by NPT:

CENTER PROTESTS DETENTION OF PERSECUTED STUDENT

EL PASO, TX – On Thursday, June 11th, 2009, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center will hold a protest on the behalf of asylum seekers, specifically Ruben Duarte-Acosta at 9 a.m. in front of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) located at 1545 Hawkins Blvd.

Ruben Duarte-Acosta and his family arrived at the United States-Mexico border in June 2007 seeking asylum in the United States after being persecuted by a known drug cartel. Duarte-Acosta was separated from his family during processing because he was 21 years old at the time. His family was sent to the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in Taylor, TX, where they were granted parole by the San Antonio Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Detention and Removal Office (DRO).

NPT City: Segundo Barrio meeting tonight

This has been a matter of great controversy, but we haven’t been able to cover it. Looks like the final meeting on the issue is tonight. Anyone know what comes next, other than the June 30 City Council meeting?
