NPT County: Cobos Complaint metastasizes; complaint filed by his lawyers against Commissioner Escobar

Stuart Leeds and Theresa Caballero, the lawyers for El Paso County Judge Anthony Cobos in the ethics complaint filed against him by city Rep. Emma Acosta (read the details here), have filed an ethics complaint against El Paso County Commissioner Veronica Escobar.

They’re alleging the same thing Acosta alleged against Cobos: That (in this case) Escobar used her official authority to interfere with his political activities by asking for an accounting of how much the episode has cost the county, in terms of staff time and other expenses.

That’s basically it, although there’s more detail in the complaint. Read it here: EthicsComplaint-Jun-2009

  1. I am a tax payer and I feel that these people should just stop. As it is all we hear is the deficit that we have and then we keep getting all of these ridiculous lawsuits. I for one have had enough. Why we ever voted for any of them is beyond me now because all that we have received as Thanks is disappointments, time wasted and people literally acting like little kids. What are you showing our kids. What kind of role models are you guys. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Get back to what you were put there to do. Stop with the you did this you did that and start taking care of us like all of you swore you would do. Because you have let us all down with the way all of you have behaved. How embarrassing. Just stop acting like kids and start trying to work together. I am disappointed in the manner that all of you are behaving and I am sure that I am not the only El Pasoan who would testify to the same thing. STOP WITH THE LAWSUITS GET BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE ELECTED TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE. STOP ACTING LIKE LITTLE KIDS…. MY 18 month old behaves and listens better than you guys do. STOP. STOP. STOP.

  2. I have lost the respect that i once had for Teresa Caballero for standing up to her father.

The lawsuit is frivolous, and quite frankly, a joke. I am not a cheerleader for Escobar, but as a concerned taxpayer I say, “Good job Commissioner.” That is a valid question which I believe, is long overdue.

This is an issue that I pray El Paso residents will take into consideration when casting their ballots for County Judge next time around..
Interfere with his political activities by asking for an accounting of how much the episode has cost the county, in terms of staff time and other expenses? C’mon TC, you yourself don’t buy that….

  3. This ethics complaint is a joke. What is even more incredible, is the fact that at the end of the complaint filed by Leeds, he is accepting that Cobos turned over Acosta’s job application to Lozano to support him in his political campaign.

“Escobar’s actions are political, vindictive and part of her strategy to run for County Judge and to prevent Judge Cobos from participating in politics. They are part of her strategy to put a chilling affect on Judge Cobos and to prevent him from participating in his friends’ campaigns and to punish him for supporting the political campaign of Alejandro Lozano.”

The disclosure of official documents to support a political candidate is precisely the violation alleged by Acosta in her complain filed against Cobos. By including that paragraph in his complaint against Escobar, Leeds is confirming that indeed Cobos disclosed the documents to interfere in a political campaign, violating the County’s ethics code. I guess now the ethics board won’t have much trouble finding Cobos guilty. Leeds defense strategy will end sinking Cobos. Did somebody say Leeds was a good attorney?

  4. All this mudslinging, no wonder the Rio Grande level is so low.

  5. Lalo: You are obviously not too bright and can’t see through nuances because you missed the true beauty of Leeds’ complaint. First off, he’s saying it was an open records request and if something is public, as Rodriguez told Cobos it was, it does not matter what the purpose that it will be used for is. But what Leeds is saying is that if Acosta now wants to say it was political (and remeber who cares if it was under the Open Records law) and if that is her allegation then her friend Escobar is interfering with Cobos’ right to engage in politics and by doing so, Escobar violated the Code of Ethics. It’s brilliant. Leeds is very foxy as all the Assistant DA’s down there at the County know from going up against him and losing. And now Jose Rodriguez knows it too after Leeds cross-examined him for hours and extracted exactly what he needed from him to win Cobos’ case.

  6. Childish nonsense. Get back to the business of the County and quit playing “the point the finger” game. People are losing jobs, insurance and can’t put food on their table and these fools are playing with OUR money to create political notarity. Quit spending the County money on such frivolity.

  7. I am not a Cobos fan and at one point I thought that Escobar had class that now went down the tubes, she is as bad as all politicians. She walks the courthouse like she has no political agenda but she is just as bad as the Lutherites. Its embarrassing all of you need to get to work and do whats right for the citizens of the County.
