NPT Capitol: Chavez to Marquez: Don’t bother showing up, and take your present back

The hits keep coming from state Rep. Norma Chavez, who has made clear her disdain for state Rep. Marisa Marquez. Maybe we’ll go into the history some other time. Meanwhile, the more recent history from a couple of days ago … Chavez graduated from UT Austin with a BA in Government and had a party Friday morning.

Word had gone out that Chavez told Marquez not to show up. It didn’t seem worth trying to confirm, but yesterday, Chavez saved us the effort. It was told to us by several sources that Paul Strelzin was dogging Marquez for not showing up to Chavez’s event. Chavez called Strelzin’s show to clarify that Marquez was informed, via text message, that if she showed up she would be asked to leave. Then today, Chavez sent her staff lawyer to Marquez’s office to return a gift, a picture frame, that Marquez had tried to give Chavez.

That’s our delegation, folks.

  1. Sito, what do you mean “that’s our delegation, folks”? Shouldn’t you be saying, “That’s Norma Chavez for you, folks”?

  4. As a supporter and hard worker for both of them, the fact that a personal moment between Norman, Connie, Norma, and friends was brought to the public by someone that we ALL thought was above politics. It is disappointing to hear that after the 23 years, the one day that should be all about Rep. Chavez was circumvented by someone who chose to make political gain from it.

What’s most unfortunate is rather than taking the high road, which everyone assumes that someone with not only a Bachelor’s Degree, but just a defense of a dissertation shy of a Master’s Degree in Theology from Notre Dame, should have taken in respect to this matter, succomed to political pressure to ensure that the only person that stood beside you at your lowest points looked foolish.

    That is shameful.

What’s worse is the fact this isn’t the first time Rep. Marisa Marquez has done this. Back last April, at her post-election party, Norma Chavez had prepared a speech for Rep. Marquez detailing the reasons that she had fought for her. The speech described an incident where Representative Marquez crawled under Rep. Chavez’s car to change a tire. It was in that moment that Rep. Chavez realized that this was a woman that she should support. And she did, she put her political capital on-line for Rep. Marquez. But, at the ceremony, Rep. Marquez did all she could to ensure that no one ever heard that story. Beyond the insults, and badgering and yelling at Rep. Chavez, Rep. Chavez took the high road and left the ceremony.

In the end, we all know that Rep. Marquez won the primary election with the help of Rep. Chavez, her friends and family. However; it breaks my heart to see that she let politics ruin what was at one time friendship.

As a proud college graduate myself, I can understand not wanting someone that has spent the last four months underminig your achievements at your ceremony, or at your party. None of the people who posted earlier were there to see the kisses, tears, and celebretory hugs from the people that helped Rep. Chavez through the hard times to graduate. They weren’t there to see a fellow UT graduate hug Rep. Chavez and say “Congratulations,” only to turn to his parents and say Mom that is our State Representative Norma Chavez, who graduated with me.

Did anyone realize that Rep. Chavez would have graduated last year had she not dropped classes to help Rep. Marquez win? No, of course not, that’s not news.

For someone who’s legeslation got passed UNANIMOUSLY, I can’t understand what is gained by this? But then again, its another negative article against Rep. Chavez in her moment of happiness.
