NPT City: Insisting that Houston school benefits the neighborhood

A statement from the Newman Park Neighborhood Association regarding the Houston Elementary issue:

The Newman Park Neighborhood Association opposes the closing of Houston Elementary School, but does not want to see the status quo continue. Currently, Houston is in need of improvements to the school building, surrounding grounds and the level of services offered to the student body. Rather than close the school, the association would like to see EPISD invest in the school to make it a neighborhood gem. Strong local neighborhood schools, make strong neighborhoods. To attract a larger student body, EPISD can initiate a dual language program like the popular program at Mesita Elementary on the Westside. An attractive, vibrant Houston elementary school, will not only benefit the students currently enrolled and but will support and further efforts already underway to energize older central neighborhoods.

If EPISD ultimately decides to close Houston, the Association will insist that EPISD join forces with the city of el paso, neighborhood associations, individual residents, the business community and other stakeholders to implement a use for the property that strengthens the surrounding neighborhood.
