NPT City: Quintana targets media conflicts

Interesting item from city Rep. Rachel Quintana. DavidK over at Refuse the Juice seems to think it’s aimed at him. Raises an interesting question: Who is a member of the media? I can’t see how this one can be worked out, but it’s sure to create debate.

Representative Quintana authorizes the following to be posted as an “Introduction” on the 4/28/2009 City Council Agenda and authorizes the “Public Hearing/Regular” Agenda posting on the 5/5/2009 Regular City Council Agenda:

  1. Judge Rules on “Citizen” Reporters
    By Justin Pope
    Associated Press Writer
    Wednesday, March 6, 2002; 12:16 PM

BOSTON–A federal court has ruled that onprofessional news gatherers have the same rights as professionals. “Citizen producers of shows are entitled to the same First Amendment protections as producers of shows for
large media outlets.” Ponsor also struck down an AOTV rule that prohibits broadcasters from showing illegal acts. Such a requirement, he said, would have
prevented the broadcast of “some of the most important moments in American history,” including footage of the Bloody Sunday attack on civil rights
    marchers in Selma, Ala.

  2. I am embarrased to say that I am family to Rep. Quintana. She is an absolute idiot

  3. The term ‘media’ has become blurred. The old definition was limited to journalists and photo journalists employed by print and photo news outlets. These distinctions are no longer valid. The First Amendment still prevails but it has now become individualized.

  4. Absolutely pointless and unnecessary, she should be embarrassed to even float the thought out of her empty head.

Doesn’t she still owe us money, or is that the other one? both?..I can’t keep track of all the shady politicians and public figures anymore..its a never ending parade of idiots, liars, cheaters, thieves and uptonogoodnicks.

    they have no shame…

  5. Just as David K has pointed out, if it is wrong for taxpayer dollars to be spent on cheerleaders a la EPISD, surely it is wrong for taxpayer dollars to be indirectly benefiting Debbie Downer and overall welfare…err…city contract receipt David K. 1st Amendment my arse. This guy would rather influence or stack the council with folks who don’t mind doing business with his boss…his dad.

  6. i dont care that he is in the media, but his views will always be clouded. many of his views help the industry of his father’s firm and are complete opposite views of events like the tea party. if his mom worked for hunt which is now one of their firms key customers,
if his mom was appointed by beto to the civil service board, if he is related to joyce wilson, then his motives as a media person will always be questioned. maybe just as hard as he has questioned strelz’s motives for the past weeks and at least 4 to 5 blogs on that subject.

  7. Andrew: your post makes no sense. If you had any clue as to how the contract process works in a public entity then you might have written a more literate post or nothing at all. Strelzin’s contract value was kept under $25,000 therefore it did not go out for bid. What Quintana is trying to do is to single out one individual and/or corporation and that is a violation of several laws and individual rights. She put herself in the public eye by running for office and getting elected. She needs to put on her big girl panties and get over it and conduct herself in a mature and intelligent manner. And yes – her case is still pending in the court system for forgery. But I guess that’s not important to any of the taxpayers in this city.

  8. Media – Is that not the plural of the sterile environment for cultivating bacteria, viruses, and many organisms that can be dangerous to life? Although often used for good (curing disease, say, or watching Fox news), media also is used in pernicious application (growing anthrax at home, watching MSNBC)

  9. I am not related to Joyce Wilson. How do people think this crap up?

And I never said it was wrong to pay Strelzin as a consultant. Read my post. I simply asked if people thought it was a good idea and then I did some math with the numbers. I simply put some ideas out there.

People need to get their facts straight.
