NPT Capitol: Moreno makes surprise appearance at the House

cimg9905As the Texas gets ready to debate the budget, former state Rep Paul Moreno made a surprise appearance at the Capitol today. Moreno said he wanted to, “make sure the federal money that belongs to Texas, belongs to the children, belongs to the schools stays where it’s at and is not going to pay the state debt.”

Moreno hoped that with the stimulus money, Texas “had a lot of money” despite the economic downturn. As such money should not be spent the “old fashioned way” – what Moreno calls “for the greedy and not the needy.”

Moreno reference the fact that the Senate’s version of the budget had used stimulus money in order that money from the rainy day fund need no be spent. Moreno would like to the House spend the stimulus money in ways that benefit the poor rather than plug the structural deficit.

“With the senate being so conservative, I hope that our guys here in the house take care and remedy that situation,” he said
