NPT City: Candidate Carlos Rivera before and after

The image below arrived via email to the NPT offices:

Attached is the official campaign photo for Carlos Rivera’s campaign for Mayor. Please use the attached photo for all future reference of Mr. Rivera and if possible, please replace the old photos with this one.

Thank you very much for your understanding

Luis Ruiz

On the right, an image published in El Paso Magazine’s April issue, is the look candidate Rivera had for most of the race. Granted the image on the right is in gray scale, the new image of candidate Rivera makes it look as though he hired some new staffers. –Lisa Degliantoni

  2. Lias, wouldnt you have the best possible photo available as most people ?

Your remark indicates bias and a veiled back handed compliment. In any case it is just another indication of how biased NPT and the EP Times is.

  4. Rey,
My post was not meant to be a compliment, front or back handed. Rivera had what’s known in the media as a mid-campaign makeover. I am illustrating that using before and after photos.
They sell senses of humor at the dollar store if you’re interested.

  5. Ever hear of the Sympathy Vote? Please keep attacking Carlos – the only true Chicano who will fight for the forgotten and those at the very bottom of the economic ladder. Go, Carlos! Avientate, carnal. Orale!

  6. On another note: I wonder what Lisa has against Carlos Rivera. It seems that she’s attacking him without provocation. Carlos is an honorable man, who has served his nation. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He is running for Mayor because he believes he can make a difference in helping those who need the most help. He may not have the support of the Bigs in town, but he’s got the support of us – the grass roots. Guess which group has the most people? Lisa – lay off Carlos. Challenge him on the issues if you must. But, to quibble over which photo he uses in his campaign is asinine and childish. Who cares what photo he uses? Is he qualified to be Mayor – indubitably! Is he a good El Paso citizen who has served his nation, his state and his city well? Sirol! Will he be a good Mayor? Yes, he will be a great Mayor. So, what’s the problem, Lisa? Why do you hate Carlos Rivera so much? Or are you still angry at Chicano political candidates because of what happened to Manny Barraza? Why do you hate Chicanos so much, Lisa? Oh, you don’t? You could’ve fooled me.

  7. Joe, You are the only one I see bringing up race and hate in this convo.
What does being Chicano and fighting for the forgotten and those at the very bottom of the economic ladder have to do with being qualified to be Mayor of this city?

Additionally you said: who cares what picture he uses?..well obviously HE does…LOL

Even if Lisa wouldn’t have posted about it, do you think the public wouldn’t have noticed the new and highly Photoshopped picture? They took 10-15yrs off the guy..airbrushed out wrinkles and gave him that warm fuzzy glow, etc….it just screams FAKE FAKE FAKE!

But hey kill the messenger, right?
It must be Lisa’s fault that Carlos Rivera wasn’t smart enough to have done all this “image enhancement” PRIOR to the election …not mid course and so poorly executed.

  8. Damn right, it’s important for me that he’s a Chicano. And, you know what? All I’m doing is LOL at the childishness.

  9. ever seen gustavo reveles pic in the times ? how abouut byrds pics, joyce wilson’s. without older pics and photoshop every one of these people would look much worse. what about your pics lisa ? no touch up of newer pics or are they all 10 years ago. you would probably look more like a hag than you did then. every one tries to make themselves look better. you only make a poiny about carlos. what about everyone else. ever see davidk’s pics of he and his wife on his blog. do you think he would put a bad pic on there ? carlos is probably the most honest candidate we have out of all of them. someone obviously told him how to make himself look better in pics. i hate he had to do it because you would hope he wouldnt have too. however you had to cut him down for doing so.

  10. To robnelp:

You ask “What does being Chicano and fighting for the forgotten and those at the very bottom of the economic ladder have to do with being qualified to be Mayor of this city?

You’re kidding right? Since El Paso is the center of the universe for “being Chicano” for those “at the very bottom of the economic ladder” I would say that IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH BEING MAYOR OF EL PASO!

  11. From the photos, looks like El Paso politics is agreeing with Carlos Rivera.
And in regard to the ISSUES, he’s the main man on May 9th to be elected mayor for the future of El Paso.
Ask the candidate what he thinks about the ISSUES; now that he has your “eye”, maybe he can have your “vote”, as well.

  12. I have personally known Lisa Degliantoni and she has given me nothing but admiration and respect. She had me on as a guest on her show to talk about the campaign, was trying to get Carlos Rivera on as a guest, and NPT has published our press releases.
Furthermore, she has my true admiration for the spirit behind “Charlando Con La Gringa,” and that is that she was trying to inspire English-only speakers in El Paso to learn not only the language but the culture.
I believe that there has been a huge misunderstanding in this comment thread. I look forward to working with everyone involved toward a common purpose; El Paso’s progress. i know that everyone here is committed to that purpose.

  13. […] most voters only saw the mansuit images of her posted here. But, since I took the time to mention Carlos Rivera’s mid-campaign makeover, I thought I should do the same for Cain. I think if she wins the Northeast seat, she should rock […]
