NPT City: Apartment Association endorsements in mayor and City Council races
Couple days late. This news release went out Friday:
APARTMENT ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES ENDORSEMENTS
El Paso, Texas – April 3, 2009 – The El Paso Apartment Association (EPAA) Better Government PAC on behalf of the EPAA endorses the following candidates for the May 9, 2009 city election:
For Mayor Gus Haddad
For City Representative, District 2 Yamil Chaheine
For City Representative, District 3 Jose Alexandro Lozano
For City Representative, District 4 Melina Castro
For City Representative, District 7 Trini Muñoz
Melanie Bailey, President of the EPAA stated, “The endorsements were made after thoughtful deliberation. Our responsibility is to keep monthly rents affordable for our community and incoming military families. The current majority council and mayor are making that very challenging by unfairly targeting apartment residents and the vendors with whom we do business with. We’ve seen fees go up at unprecedented rates during the last four years. We’ve asked to sit around the table to discuss how we can work together only to receive the cold shoulder. We must put a stop to that.”
Demetrio Jimenez, Chairperson for the Governmental Committee for EPAA explained that residents of apartment homes are being charged 4-10 times what residents of single family homes are being charged for storm water fees; there’s talk about adding a new “franchise fee” on commercial trash which could increase the cost of waste management by up to 10%; and a new environmental fee on water meters has increased upwards of 400%.
The EPAA is a nonprofit Texas Corporation and trade industry group, representing owners and managers of 34,000 housing rental units where more than 65,000 people that live in El Paso County, Texas. EPAA is an affiliate of the Texas Apartment Association.
