NPT City: The Caballero ‘Click’

Fun with juxtaposition, or, spot the word:

— From the Theresa Caballero blog: City Rep Steve Ortega is the one term incumbent in district six. He is part of the Ray Caballero, Eliot Shapleigh, Jose Rodriguez click.

— From a mailer touting the candidacy of Ortega’s opponent, Trini Munoz: There’s presently a “click” that controls city government. … You know who they are and you also know that our city representative is one of the voting click’s strongest voices.

As background, Caballero wrote the blog item touting the candidacy of Munoz, and used the item as an introduction for Munoz’s letter to voters.

Now, folks from the Ortega “click” are going to view the mailer as a classic campaign product in the Luther Jones mold. I tend to disagree. Luther would not have misspelled “click.”

  1. It doesnt take a genius to figure out who is in the tax-fee-free spending clique. I dont need this candidate or any one else to tell me the obvious.

I really dont care who is supporting this candidate, he cant be any worse than the “progressives”(code for socialist) who see themselves as ENTITLED to spend YOUR money. Any politician that can keep their hands out of my pockets is ok by me.

A couple of things are obvious, Oretga represents the Mayor not you and he cant make a move without checking with his sidekick on counci

  2. Trini sounds sincere…but he hangs out with Jaime O and therefore I’ll stay with Ortega. I’m not saying that Trini is not an honest guy, it’s just that I don’t want Jaime any closer to the decision making process than he already is. Sorry Trini, but you’re hanging out wirh a creep and a big time loser!!!!

  3. Elitist, snooty Sito points out a misspelling in the letter hoping that you ignore the message of the letter.

Make no mistake Pito is part of the Clique.

    How is my spelling?

  4. Just more reasons not to [candidate] vote [except referendums, constitutional questions or tax votes] that way one is not part of any ‘click’ for sure.

  5. Yeah, Anyone who hangs out with or is on the Jamie Perez slate is taboo.. Although Steve Ortega is a world class publicity seeker, he is better than any of the Jamie bunch.

  7. Trini needs a fact checker. His letter is full of false information about Ortega. It it typical of today’s political campaigns. Can’t someone just run with the truth? Throw it out there. The public may like it — for a change.

  8. I laughed hard at the misspelled Click! I was looking for a mouse click — perhaps a connection to some juicy info.

  9. Sure it seems trivial, but does she really not know that “clique” is different from “click”? How annoying.

  10. That’s hilarious. Good old Theresa . . .

Anyway, the word “clique” is correctly pronounced “kleek.”

  11. Visited the blog written by Theresa Caballero. Wow…there is A LOT of rage there. This type of “endorsement” is kind of scary, if you ask me. I’m not sure you win anyone over to your candidate by openly showing so much disdain for so many people in such a public way.

I’m new in town, but I’ve heard that fomer Mayor, Ray Caballero, the one she lambasts throughout her blog, is her father. Is that true?

If so, what on earth is the story there?!?

As for Trini Munoz, don’t know a thing about him. I just want to offer a little advice…that is to say there are people in this City who have not lived here all their lives, people like me who are interested in the issues, people who don’t care where all the skeletons are buried, who put them there, how long they’ve been there, and who knows they are there but did nothing to reveal them.

What I can tell you is that when a campaign kicks off spewing this much venom, a red flag goes up for me. I think Mr. Munoz may want to distance himself a little from Ms. Caballero. In my view, her blog is indicative of exactly the type of policits people are sick of. And while I know nothing of the El Paso electorate, I know that in my circle of newcomers, we are not impressed with the finger pointing, laying blame, type of campaign. To us, it comes across as vidictive – so who’s to say the other side will be any better in office?

We’ll be watching for the candidate with POSITIVE ideas for the City’s future. We love our new home and want to see it thrive, so I hope we’ll be hearing more about that in the coming weeks.

Of course, we’ll be “clicking” on NPT to get all the latest.

  12. New in town.

Ray Caballero is her father. He used to beat his family and cheat on his wife… allegedly.

Then he raised everybody’s taxes and tried to take old people’s houses… allegedly.

As far as his clique? Do birds of a feather flock together? Maybe. Maybe not.

  13. Trini is a nice person – but in watching him on various boards and commissions he has served on in the past he is one that wants to reinvent the wheel the first day he sits on a board. He really has no clue how government works and also the limitations on government. He means well – but he really doesn’t understand the process. He has run for office I don’t know how many times since 1997.

  14. new in town, ray caballero cheated on his wife and they were divorced. teresa sided with her mom. the only credit i gave ray is i think he did pay his kids education. however, i think all the kids sided with the mom so he probably was a deadbeat dad. he had a new family with his new wife and they were paraded on the billboards when he ran for mayor. he was partner in a law firm with representative eliot shapleigh at one time and still may be. their firm sued bank of america here in el paso for discrimination against minorities on business loans and won. (sounds like acorn, huh) bank of america then pulled nearly all their commercial banking out of el paso and still hardly has any real commercial reps now and wont lend any business money without promising your first born as collateral. most of their commercial people left and went to state national. ray become mayor and during his tenure teresa went after him on every crap initiative he had going. she made him really look like an idiot one time when they were going to expand and remodel the mayors office and top floor for a million bucks. teresa pointed out to the reps that ray had convinced to vote his way that while the mayor’s office was getting bigger their offices were getting smaller. accordingly the reps then voted it down. it was great to watch. susie byrd was an assistant to caballero during his tenure and still does whatever shap and ray tell her to do. michael r wyatt may be a partner now or was at one time, but im not totally sure.

caballero’s biggest deal was the tiff project where he intended to eminent domain the areas around thomason. buy it cheap and then re-sale to hunt or maybe allow the city or hunt catch a windfall profit on the sale of the land later or so was alleged. teresa pointed ray’s plan out and i believe most el pasoans believed her because if anyone knows their father it is their child. teresa has pointed out many good things over time, but has gone overboard at times also. she is a good watch dog for the people along with the likes of jim janacek, gerald miller, the old man ray and jerry theidt.

  15. I am a regular reader of TC’s blog. I wish she would write more. Her information is great and it is one of the few sources of news that I trust. I appreciate TC letting everyone know just who Steve Ortega is and now they can make up their own minds.

It is too bad that Sito is so biased against TC. Sito hurts his own credibility by being so petty. He never addressed the issues or the facts in TC’s blog. What is Sito afraid of and why so venemous?

I also appreciate the fact that TC is a lawyer and yet she takes time out of her schedule to write a blog which is not her job as it is Sito’s. She lets everyone know what is going on at the court house and else where.

If only Sito were so diligent and it is his job to cover those issues, not hers.

    Loved TC's blog

  16. Tc’s blog was wonderful. Sito lowers himself by being so petty. My question is, why doesn’t Sito tell us who the candidates are and what their voting records are and who their benefactors are. Why does TC have to do for the voters what is in fact Sito’s job. Where are the stories on the court house and the judges and the big cases? Those of us who work at the county rely heavily on TC’s blog for the news. I also wonder why Sito is so hateful to TC.

TC is a lawyer and her job is to represent people in court. The fact that she takes time out to write a blog is an extra she does. Why is she having to do Sito’s job. Does Sito defend people for free which would be the = to when TC does a blog. The answer is no.

So TC does her job and Sito’s for free and Sito does what?

  17. “casual observer” must be new in town, too because he/she doesn’t offer historically accurate information.

Theresa Caballero is a sad, lonely, pathetic figure…allegedly.

Jaime O. Perez partners with her on occasion to lie to people and create fear and loathing in El Paso so the people will feel like they are their heroes…allegedly.

Anything/anyone they endorse, in my opinion, is cause for question and suspicion.

  18. Do you really believe Susie, Beto and Steve do everything Ray, Eliot and Jose say or wish for?

Just Like Melina, Rachel and Eddie listen to everything Luther says?

Why don’t we call a special meeting to discuss these perceptions and call everyone out.

El Paso seems that it will always be a second rate city if this is how local politics are run. I’m sure you have this in other places…but we need to get real and except the fact that this is how our city runs and call our officials out on it so that everything is out in the open, but this is wishful thinking.

  19. casual observer, i did remember and watch that council meeting you spoke of and tc made her father look pretty bad about the re-modeling of the offices back then. i remember medina’s look when he realized caballero had duped him also. it was hilarious.

checho, its nice to know that maybe someone has the opinion the spendaholic(cook, byrd, ortega) reps are supported by certain people just like the non-spenders(castro,holguin,quintana). beto is probably the odd ball out. if everyone thinks luther is involved in everything, then why cant someone think elliott is involved. some of the candidates cant help that tc or jop is for them. its obvious both tc and jop support the non-spending group. i could care less if the candidate is supported by jop or tc, but that the candidate stands for what i believe and my concerns.

i wish no candidates were labeled, but it seems that is what the press in el paso does. i really doubt luther has any time to worry about ep politics. he needs to worry about not going to jail. elliot probably does have a hand in it though, how much who knows. when it all come down to it, ideology separates them all. you are either tax and spend or you are not, its just that simple.

how many of you go back and proof read your comments to check for spell errors or maybe using the “here” where you may have spelled “hear.” i doubt teresa has time to go back and check her blog and probably writes(or rights) it on the fly and clicks(cliques) the “save file” and then runs to court. unlike sito who has all the time in the world to check his article. most people think and type the first thing that comes into their head and they dont spell check or word check. of course if i were stoned when i was writing i probably wouldnt mess up either. concentration is great when you stoned. right, sito.

  20. He’s not the odd ball out and he does listen to someone. His sidekick just wasnt there so they could agree with each other. He also listens to himself about how he is ready to challenge the Congressman for the seat.

Remember he can see Juarez from his place so now he is an international affairs expert.

  22. Johnnyfriegas you got it! When Mr Caballero and his hole in the wall gang tried to, ah, take the properties at the Jefferson High area, he mentioned to me that every thing south of the freeway was to be a dinosaur. Well it did not. He sort of disappeared and his cli-ca is on its way out. Thank god Larry’s thinking for him self now, and every body else outstanding job you can count on my help!

  24. Now that Steve Ortega has been stripped bare (bear), and Sito has made (maid) himself look like a jerk, Where is TC’s promised blog on Susie Byrd (Bird)?

And while the NPT is criticizing the Times about writing about the sold out performance of George Lopez and others while ignoring the forclosures, unemployment rate, etc, maybe Sito could do the figures on how many people have lost their houses due to high taxes promoted by Ortega, Byrd, O’Rourke. Why don’t you look up from your own desk Sito!

Byrd and Ortega & O’Rourke are putting families out of their homes and now out of their cars.
