NPT DC: Reyes comment on Obama speech

silverstrereyesNews release from U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes. For the transcript of Obama’s speech, click here.

“President Obama was very honest about the challenges our country is facing but reaffirmed that America will rise to the challenge and will emerge from this crisis a stronger nation. The road ahead will not be easy, as we are confronting one of the most serious financial crises in our nation’s history, but the President and the Congress are determined to lead our country in a new direction and will continue to advance an ambitious legislative agenda that will move America forward again.

“In the short time since President Obama took the oath of office, the Congress passed, and the President signed into law, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a bold job creation package that will create or save over 3.5 million American jobs. This critical legislation provides long-overdue investments in education, health care, renewable energy, and provides tax relief for 95 percent of families that will help jumpstart our economy and help pull our country out of this recession. The President also signed legislation that expands health insurance for millions of uninsured children in the United States.

“These early legislative achievements will have a significant impact on the El Paso community. Last week, I had the opportunity to discuss the funding that El Paso-area school districts will receive under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Our local schools will receive tens of millions dollars for Title I and other programs to give our students the tools and resources they need to remain competitive in the years ahead. The recovery package also provides significant funding for school construction, modern technology, and teacher training programs to foster an innovative learning environment. These are the types of investments that will pay dividends in the future and strengthen America’s economic foundation.”
