NPT Media: Turnabout is fair play; thanks, Times

6a00d83451c9c869e20105371d836b970b-250wi1The El Paso Times’ Roy Ortega blogged today about the El Paso Media Group: Some subscribers of El Paso Magazine tell me they suspect big financial trouble at El Paso Media Group, which publishes the slick style magazine.

The piece also goes into the efforts of EPMG Publisher Keith Mahar to sell his home. Here’s Keith’s quote regarding that: “The house has been for sale for almost a year in order to continue our project so we can attempt to kick a publicly funded media company’s ass.”

Go Keith! Let’s juxtapose that with Times’ publisher Ray Stafford’s attempt to sell his own home. Oh wait, we can’t. Stafford hasn’t commented.

NPT Juxtapose: Immigration prison burns, surely to be filled again soon

Fun with juxtaposition:

From Tom Barry, writing for the Americas Program: The Reeves County Detention Center started burning again on Wednesday night, and the billowing clouds of smoke could be seen for many miles across the northern reaches of the Chihuahua Desert. There’s nothing much here except abandoned ranch houses, still oil pumps, endless stretches of creosote and tar bush—and a prison for immigrants on fire. [link]

From any one of numerous national stories (this one from a Washington state television station): The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has 11,000 positions it wants to fill across the country. You can apply today at Blaine during the agency’s National Career Day. Most of the open jobs are front line positions that can pay nearly $60,000 after a few years. [link]

NPT: Troncoso on Phelps, decapitations and the Drug War

Sergio Troncoso on the Drug War: Recently my parents in El Paso, Texas called me and recounted another series of decapitations in Juárez, Mexico, their hometown, a place that has become a no-man’s land of murder and mayhem. Drug cartels battle the Mexican government mano-a-mano, with thousands dead. Meanwhile, Michael Phelps is pictured inhaling from a bong in South Carolina, Whoopi Goldberg proudly admits, to audience cheers, that she has smoked weed and demands that we leave Phelps alone, and the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart jokes repeatedly about bongs and marijuana, making it oh-so-cool to light up. I wonder if anyone will ever connect the dots.
