NPT: Commissioner Escobar seeks Farah building mall proposal delay as Commissioner Perez gives birth

Update at 1 p.m.: After much heated debate, the county ended up postponing after all.

Update at 10 a.m. Monday (Feb. 2): The county almost certainly will postpone. It’s going through resolutions, and will probably get to the agenda in a few minutes to postpone this item.

A letter from El Paso County Commissioner Veronica Escobar:
February 1, 2009

Hi everyone,

Because I issued a general invitation for folks to attend tomorrow morning’s Commissioners Court meeting where we have the Farah incentives on the agenda, I wanted to make sure you were aware of a recent development: I’m going to ask the Court for a three week postponement.

As many of you know, Commissioner Anna Perez was expecting a baby. The great news is that over the weekend, she gave birth to a healthy daughter. Both mom and baby girl are doing well, and she asked that we consider postponing the item until she can be there to vote on the issue.

There’s so much community interest in this item, and there are proponents and opponents who were all gearing up to attend tomorrow’s meeting. But every commissioner should be given the opportunity to participate in this important decision; hopefully, there won’t be any opposition from the Court to a postponement. Please help me spread the word — if you or anyone you know was planning on attending, please let them know we might (hopefully) postpone.

If the postponement goes through, I’ll be sure to send you another email before the item comes back on the agenda.

Congratulations to Commissioner Perez, her husband and her family!
